Ocean cruises tend to offer variety, big-ship amenities, and lots of choice. River cruises tend to be smaller, calmer, and closer to the scenery. The right one depends on the kind of vacation you want.
If you have ever stood in front of a menu with 14 good options and ordered nothing, this post is for you. Both styles are wonderful. Here is how I help people choose.
Ocean cruising: the floating resort
Bigger ships, more to do. Often there are multiple dining options, entertainment, pools, and activities for every age.
More destinations in different regions. Think islands, coastlines, and far-flung ports.
Great for groups. With lots to choose from, everyone can do their own thing and meet up for dinner.
River cruising: the floating boutique hotel
Smaller ships, calmer feel. You typically dock in or near town centers, so you can step off and start exploring.
Scenery is part of the show. The view out the window changes constantly, and many travelers love that. Often a good fit for travelers who like culture, history, and a slower pace.
Questions that help you decide
Do you want a lively vacation with lots of choices, or a quiet one with a view?
Is this a bucket-list region, or a relaxing getaway?
Who is coming along? Kids, parents, friends, or just the two of you?
How do you feel about sea days? Some love them. Others start looking for the exit.
Still undecided?
That is normal, and it is why you have me. Tell me about your travel style and I will help you narrow things down. Sometimes the answer is ocean this year and river next year. I will not judge a cruise collection.
