Five Splurges Worth It and Three That Aren't

Spend on the things that shape your days: location, a great guide, the right room, the right cabin, and one unforgettable experience. Save on the things you will barely notice.

Every trip has a budget, and every traveler has a moment where they say, "Well, I'm already here, so why not?" Sometimes that is wisdom. Sometimes that is a very expensive souvenir. Here is how I think about it.

Five splurges that are often worth it

  • A great location. Staying where you want to be often saves time, transportation, and tired feet. Your trip gets longer when you are not commuting to it.

  • A knowledgeable private guide. A good one turns a pile of old stones into a story. Typically this is the upgrade people talk about afterward.

  • The right room or cabin. Not always the biggest, but the one that fits how you travel. A balcony, a quiet corner, or a view can change the whole mood.

  • One truly special meal or experience. Pick one that matches who you are. Make it the highlight rather than a dozen so-so "highlights."

  • Smoother logistics. Private transfers or well-timed flights can protect your energy, especially after a long travel day.

Three that usually are not

  • Every upgrade, everywhere. If everything is a splurge, nothing feels special. Choose a few and enjoy them.

  • Paying extra for things you will not use. A big suite for a trip spent mostly out exploring, or a pricey package with features you will skip.

  • The famous tourist trap with the famous price. Some places are famous because they are wonderful. Others are famous for being famous. I will tell you which is which.

Your splurges are your own

Honestly, there is no universal list. A splurge for one traveler is a waste for another. Some people light up over a food tour, and others would trade it for a better bed. That is why I begin by asking what matters to you.
